Metro Trains Melbourne (MTM)

Technical Option Assessment

Navitas Engineering was engaged by MTM in 2018 to carry out an in-depth evaluation of their in-service DC traction switchgear and a detailed assessment of options for replacement, refurbishment and retrofit solutions. A key aspect of this work was a review of the current carrying capacity of the legacy switchgear driven by the introduction of new rolling stock and timetable, leading to higher current demands on the traction power distribution system.

Navitas Engineering worked closely with MTM and prospective equipment suppliers, which included the development of the required performance criteria and the detailed evaluation of the capability of the legacy equipment, with and without modification.

Ultimately, the work carried out enabled the client to benefit from a cost-effective solution which minimised operational disruption and maximised the service life of the modified switchgear.
