Thameslink Programme
Load Monitoring and Short Circuit Testing

Navitas Engineering was commissioned by UK Power Networks Services to carry out load monitoring and develop a short circuit testing strategy at Blackfriars station and Ludgate Cellars substation, to enable the design of the arcing mitigation measures within the Dual Electrified Area GRIP 4 project.

This project involved the measurement and analysis of the current flow in the complex negative system driven by trains running into and out of the Dual Electrified Area.

We have achieved success, despite multiple challenges arising from the complexity of the system. The analysis allowed us to gain considerable understanding of the system, current split, maximum short circuit currents. As a result, we delivered an accurate and thorough report exceeding our client’s expectations.

Future short circuit testing at Ludgate Cellars will be carried out in line with the strategy developed as part of this commission.
