SOMERTON ROAD BRIDGE

Earthing and Bonding – Design Support and Consultancy Services

Navitas Engineering was commissioned by Tony Gee and Partners to provide consultancy services on the earthing and bonding of a new road bridge to be built as part of the Great Western Electrification Project. The bridge in question replaces an older structure that spanned the old non-electrified railway. Following completion of the electrification project, the railway will carry 25 kV overhead electrification, with obvious implications to the earthing and bonding requirements for the bridge structure.

Navitas carried out a review and assessment of the proposed bridge design from an earthing and bonding perspective and proposed an outline bonding scheme which ensured compliance with the relevant standards and Network Rail Project Advice Note.

The final output consisted of marked up drawings showing the proposed bonding scheme and report providing guidance on compliance with relevant standards, a Designer’s Risk Assessment and guidance on relevant testing methods which have been used to inform the detailed design and implementation of the bridge.
